It’s time to plant garlic!
Plant your garlic before the end of October, preferably before a hard frost
Take your head of "seed" garlic and separate into individual cloves - do not peel them
Plant about 3" deep and 6" apart - pointy end up!
Water well
Cover with soil and a good layer of mulch (leaves, straw, anything natural will do). This will help protect your garlic during our nasty winters
Next spring:
In spring you will see young shoots poking through the mulch - sprinkle an organic fertilizer, water during dry spells
Next Summer:
Harvest the scapes in early summer, when they have made a full curl
Your garlic bulbs are ready to harvest when the bottom 2 or 3 leaves are starting to turn brown (in our zone our garlic was ready to harvest late July)
Gently pry the bulbs loose using a garden fork, being careful not to damage the bulbs
Hang the freshly harvested bulbs in a cool, dark space, or on a rack, with good air circulation for a few weeks
Once cured, clean the excess soil from the bulb and trim away the stems
Garlic should keep for months in a cool, dark space
